Maskne. Who’s heard of it? Is it a real thing? I’m here to tell you — it’s a real thing.

I actually asked my best friend, “What are some tips that you would like to hear on Fun Fabulous Beauty Tips?” And her first request was, “How do I battle maskne?” All of us are wearing masks more frequently. Like her, many of us are in a profession where we have to wear them all day long. Ten to twelve hours while we’re working is a long time to have friction, humidity, dirt, oil, and sweat from a hot day trapped in this mask. That’s not a great combination. We all know that.

So today, I want to give you some helpful tips for battling this new norm of maskne.

First tip — Wash your hands frequently.

I know, I know. We’re already doing that. But are we paying attention to how much we are moving the mask up and down, readjusting it on the nose, and constantly touching that mask and resituating it? Are we doing so with squeaky-clean hands? Wash your face regularly.

Second tip — Wash your face regularly.

Most of us are already washing our faces two times a day, but we may want to address what cleanser we’re using. We should be using a gentle cleanser. Your face is already sensitive from wearing that mask all day, so using a harsh or aggressive cleanser more frequently is only going to exacerbate the problem of irritated skin.

Third tip — Use a chemical exfoliant or an active toner.

What are these? Good question. Any of those products include a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. You can find these ingredients in a mild exfoliating cleanser, toner, or moisturizer. These will help to dissolve the dead skin cells on the surface and unclog pores.

Fourth tip — Use a soothing moisturizer.

Look for something with ceramides or hyaluronic acid. These will help soothe and strengthen your skin. If you can, ditch your foundation and opt for a light moisturizer with tint in it. The less product you can apply, the better.

Fifth tip — Use a clean mask.

If you’re like me and you keep multiple disposable masks in your car and grab them and use them as needed, let’s dispose of those because they are disposable masks. If you are using reusable masks, have multiples. Make sure you’re washing them often. You can rotate them through the wash and have clean ones to wear.

I hope these are some helpful tips in your battle against the crazy new norm of wearing masks all day.
